Every slot page on this site carries an RTP figure, and it is the number players ask about most. It is also the one most likely to be misread — not because the idea is difficult, but because RTP answers a different question than the one people are asking it. This guide explains what the number measures, then tests the common beliefs about it against all 12,187 games in our catalog. Several of them do not survive the test.
What RTP measures, precisely
RTP — return to player — is the share of everything staked that a game returns over its full mathematical lifetime. A 96% slot is built to pay back 96 units for every 100 wagered, counting every spin ever played on it, by everyone who plays it.
That final clause is where the misreading starts.
The sample size is not your session
The maths behind an RTP figure assumes millions of spins. Your two hundred spins are not a miniature version of that sample — they are noise inside it.
A 96% game can empty your balance in twenty minutes without deviating from its design by a fraction. A 94% game can pay triple your stake back on the same afternoon. Neither result says anything about whether the published figure is correct, and neither is evidence that a game is “hot” or “due”. Short-run results and long-run design are different quantities that happen to share a unit.
The other 4% is the whole business
If 96% is returned, 4% is kept. That is the house edge, and it is not a fee applied at the end of a session. It is built into the gap between the odds a game pays out at and the odds the winning combinations actually occur at. It is extracted continuously, spin by spin, from every player.
This is why the expected value of a slot session is negative regardless of which game you choose. Picking a higher RTP reduces the rate at which the edge applies. It does not remove it, and no pattern of stakes, timing or game-switching removes it either.
What 12,187 RTP values look like
Holding the whole catalog makes it possible to replace impressions with measurements. Here is the distribution across every game we list.
The distribution
The median RTP is 96.00% and the mean is 95.63%. Grouped:
- 97% and above — 815 games, roughly 7% of the catalog
- 96% to 97% — 6,518 games, 53%
- 94% to 96% — 4,182 games, 34%
- 90% to 94% — 584 games, under 5%
- below 90% — 88 games
Two conclusions follow, and both cut against how RTP is usually marketed.
First, 96% is the norm, not a feature. More than half the catalog sits inside a single percentage point above it. A game advertising “96.5% RTP” is announcing that it is ordinary.
Second, the useful spread is narrow. The distance between a typical game and a good one is one to two percentage points. Over a hundred spins at the same stake, that difference is worth a couple of units in expectation — far less than the swing you will actually experience in those hundred spins. RTP is a tiebreaker between games, not a strategy.
You can filter the catalog at 97% and above or 96% and above.
The values we do not trust
Those 88 games below 90% deserve a caveat rather than a headline. Some are genuinely low-RTP products. Others are almost certainly bad data: the lowest figure in the catalog is 5.77%, which no real slot ships with.
Stripping the 16 clearly impossible values below 80% leaves 12,171 games and moves the median not at all — it stays at 96.00%. The shape of the distribution survives the bad rows, but the individual rows are still wrong, and we would rather say so than quietly delete them. Where RTP does not vary — and where it does
If RTP were the lever players assume it is, it would move with the things that visibly differ between games. Mostly it does not.
Volatility changes everything except the RTP
This is the clearest result in the data. Median RTP by volatility tier, alongside the median advertised max win:

The return figure is flat to two decimal places across the entire range. The ceiling moves by a factor of ten.
That table is the argument of this article in one row of numbers. Volatility does not buy you a worse return — it redistributes the same return into fewer, larger payouts. A low-volatility game hands back small amounts often and the balance drifts down gently. A high-volatility game pays rarely and large, which in practice means long stretches of nothing broken by a hit that may or may not arrive before the money does. Identical expected return, completely different session, completely different bankroll requirement.
Mechanics do not change the return either
Median RTP by game type:

Megaways and cluster pays are often described as if the mechanic itself were generous. In this catalog they return what everything else returns. What they change is the shape of the win distribution, not its total.
Studios do differ
Here the variation is real. Median RTP for the eight studios with the most games:

The spread between the top and bottom of that list is 1.45 percentage points — larger than the difference between most individual games, and consistent across hundreds of titles each. If you want one habit that reliably nudges expectation in your favour, favouring studios that publish higher returns is a better one than hunting individual games.
Max win is a ceiling, not a forecast
The median top prize across the catalog is 2,000× the stake. But 1,627 games advertise 10,000× or more, and 216 go past 50,000×.
A number that large is not a prediction. It is the single most extreme outcome the maths permits — usually a specific combination inside a bonus round that most players will never trigger. High max win and high volatility travel together, as the table above shows, and the headline figure is paid for by the dry spells that fund it.
High RTP does not mean a high ceiling
Median max win, grouped by RTP band:

The games with the highest published returns have a lower median ceiling than the middle band. That is not a paradox: a game returning 97% while also offering a 50,000× top prize would have to pay almost nothing the rest of the time. Designers spend the budget in one place or the other. Choosing the highest RTP in the catalog often means choosing a flatter, smaller-win game — which may be exactly what you want, provided you know that is the trade.
The same game can ship at different RTPs
One practical complication that no catalog can fully solve.
Studios commonly ship configurable builds of the same title. A 96.5% and a 94% version of an identical game are routine, and which one you meet depends on the operator, not the game. Two casinos can run what looks like the same slot at returns a full two points apart — a wider gap than any of the differences discussed above.
The figure on a slot page here is the published or most widely deployed value. It is not a guarantee about a specific operator’s build.
How to check the build in front of you
The in-game paytable is the only authority. Open the information panel inside the game itself — most slots list the theoretical return there, and that figure describes the build you are actually playing. If the paytable and a review disagree, the paytable wins.
How to use the number
A short version for practical purposes:
- Prefer the higher RTP when two games appeal equally. It is free expectation. It is also a small effect, so do not trade a game you enjoy for one you do not.
- Read volatility to know what session you are signing up for. It predicts the experience far better than RTP does.
- Treat max win as a ceiling. Check it against volatility; a huge ceiling on a high-volatility game means long droughts.
- Check the paytable in the game. It is the only figure that describes the build in front of you.
- Ignore anything framed as a timing strategy. Nothing in the RTP figure supports the idea that a game becomes due.

Is a 96% RTP slot good?
It is average. More than half of the 12,187 games in our catalog fall between 96% and 97%, so 96% describes an ordinary game rather than a generous one. Anything at 97% or above is genuinely in the top 7% of the catalog by published return.
Does high RTP mean I will win more often?
No. RTP says nothing about how often a game pays — that is volatility. Our data shows median RTP is identical at 96.00% across low, medium and medium-high volatility games, while their median max win ranges from 500× to 3,000×. Hit frequency and return are separate properties.
Can a casino change a slot’s RTP?
Operators cannot alter a game arbitrarily, but many studios supply the same title in several configurations, and the operator chooses which to run. Differences of two percentage points between builds of one game are common. The paytable inside the game states the version you are playing.
What is a bad RTP?
Below roughly 94% is poor by current standards, and only about 5% of our catalog sits there. Values under 90% are rare enough to be worth double-checking — some in our own data are errors rather than real products, including one implausible 5.77% entry.
Does RTP apply to a single session?
No. RTP is calculated over millions of spins. Any individual session can land far above or far below it without the figure being wrong. Treating it as a session forecast is the most common mistake players make with the number.
What none of this changes
RTP is worth checking and not worth agonising over. It rewards a small habit — take the better number when the choice is otherwise even — and punishes over-interpretation.
